Mosquitoes are found from the tropics to the Arctic regions. They
are the only known means of natural transmission of the casual agents of
malaria, yellow fever, and some types of encephalitis, dengue and filariasis.
All of these diseases, with the exception of filariasis, have been common in
the United States in the past. Extensive control measures by public health officials
have virtually eliminated all but encephalitis as a problem. Mosquitoes are
also severe pests because of their annoyance to people, and many good
recreational areas are not usable during certain periods of the year because of
mosquitoes.

Mosquitoes can be distinguished
easily from other flies by the fact they have both a long, piercing proboscis
and scales on the hind margin and veins of their wings.

Approximately 150 species of
mosquitoes belonging to 12 genera are found in the United States. Only a few of
these are of importance as carriers of disease organisms, but many more are
important as nuisances.

Mosquitoes undergo complete
metamorphosis. Eggs are laid either singly or in bunch, on a water surface or
in a place where they will become wet when flooding occurs.

Mosquito larvae and pupae live
in water. Various species have become adapted to living in practically all
kinds of water - except fast-flowing streams and open portions of large bodies
of water, where there is considerable wave action. The choice of type of water
for larvae is generally quite specific.

Mosquito larvae, or
"wrigglers", live in water, but they must either surface for air or
obtain it from under water portion of plants. Larvae go through 4 instar,
usually in a period of 4-10 days, to form pupae. The pupa or
"tumbler", lives in water and, like the larva is quite active. The
pupal stage lasts from a day to as long as a few weeks. When ready to hatch,
the pupa rises to the surface, and the pupal skin splits. The adult works its
way out of the pupal skin and uses the skin for support until the body wall has
hardened enough for the adult to be capable of flight.

Male mosquitoes usually emerge
first and males of some species wait near the hatching point to mate with the
females soon after they emerge. Most female mosquitoes must have a blood meal before
they can lay fertile legs. The adult female mosquito is the only stage that
feeds on blood. The mouth parts of the male mosquito are not suitable for
blood-sucking. Therefore, their nourishment is normally derived from nectar and
plant juices from "Truman's Scientific Guide to Pest Management Operations

Carpenter ants will
establish nests in a number of different locations. Outdoor sites include
stumps, hollow logs, telephone poles, fence posts or other similar pieces of
wood. Wood that is moist or partially decayed is preferred by many species,
especially in the northeastern United States. However, cracks, crevices and
other cavities may be used to start a nest in sound wood. Carpenter ants may also
be carried into homes in firewood or enter and establish colonies via
other routes.

Often, Carpenter
ants move into buildings solely to scavenge and feed. Among the other methods,
foragers often simply enter homes via tree limbs or wires that touch the house.
Therefore, the nest, which is the source of the infestation, may or may not be
in the home itself. Most often, the primary nest, where the queen is located,
will be away from the home or other infested structure, while nests located
within the structure will be secondary, or satellite nests, where no egg-laying
queen is present.

Indoor Carpenter ant
nests may be found in window sills, hollow doors, porch substructures, roofs,
baseboards, fireplaces, shingles or other naturally hollow areas. The nest may
also be just a hollow pipe with several hundred carpenter ants in it.

In wooded areas, many
Carpenter ant colonies may be present around an infested home. More than one
satellite nest, associated with different primary nests (and
thus separate colonies), may be encountered. These
biological factor scan complicate and frustrate
control programs.

Carpenter ants excavate
nest galleries in wood. These galleries somewhat resemble the work of
termites, but can be distinguished by their entirely clean and almost
sandpapered appearance. They are frequently hollowed in moist or unsound wood,
although Carpenter ants can burrow in sound wood.

Carpenter ants do not
use wood for food. They cut galleries with the wood grain and prefer to
follow softer areas of the wood. The galleries are generally smooth
and clean-hence the "Carpenter" moniker for these ants.

The Carpenter ant diet
includes a great variety of both animal and plant foods. Carpenter ants will
feed on other insects, living or dead, and nearly anything that people eat.
Aphid honeydew is particularly attractive. May sweets found in kitchens and
storage areas are fed upon, including syrup, honey, jelly and sugar from

All ticks feed exclusively on the blood of vertebrates. There are
two families of ticks that contain the most species; these are the Ixodidae, or
hard ticks and the Argasidae, or soft ticks. The American Dog Tick, Brown Dog
Tick and The Deer tick are all members of the Hard Tick, or Ixodidea side of
the family.

When a female tick becomes
engorged with blood, her abdomen increases to many times its normal dimensions.
Males do not become so large when engorged.

Ticks have four stages in their
lifecycle: egg, larva, nymph and adult. Mating usually occurs while adult ticks
are on the body of the host animal. The female then drops to the ground and
deposits her eggs.

Adult female hard ticks feed
only once and lay one large batch of eggs, often contain as many as 10,000 or
more eggs. Depending on such conditions as temperature and humidity, larvae
will hatch from the eggs in anywhere from two weeks to several months.

The first immature stage
larvae, have only six legs. These larvae must find and attach themselves to a
host to get a blood meal. After obtaining this blood meal, they usually drop
off the host, shed their exoskeleton, and emerge as eight-legged nymphs.
Because of the difficulty of finding a suitable host, larvae can withstand long
periods without feeding.

Nymphs resemble the adult in
that they have eight legs. They do not have the genital opening of the
adult stage. Like the larva, the nymph must be able to live without feeding for
long periods of time until it finds a suitable host. After finding a host
and feeding the nymph molts and becomes an adult. Hard ticks have only one
nymph stage.

Because they cannot run, hop,
fly or move quickly, ticks must climb onto an appropriate object, such as grass
or weeds, or up onto fences or sides of buildings to wait for a suitable host
to pass by. This behavior is called questing. Questing
usually only happens a few centimeters off the ground, between ankle and knee
heights, ticks rarely quest above 60 centimeters. When ticks detect vibrations
and chemical cues, such as host odors or exhaled carbon dioxide, they extend
their forelegs to increase the chances of snagging or attaching onto a
passing host.

At certain times of the year, numerous small, immature, nymphal
termites from mature colonies molt (shed their exoskeleton) into larger nymphs
with wing buds. Sometime later, these individuals molt into sexually mature
males and females called swarmers or alates. Termite swarmers have two pairs of
long narrow wings of equal size. Unlike other termies in the colony, swarmers
are dark in color, almost black in some species.

triggered by a combination of warm temperatures and rain, termite
swarmers, which are both male and female, leave the nest in large numbers by
taking flight from specially constructed mud tubes built a half inch or
so above the substrate in which the termites are living and feeding. Termites
will continue to swarm throughout the warm season, although less frequently
than in the spring.

Termite colonies normally swarm
only once per season, but may swarm twice or more; second or later swarms
generally do not match the intensity of the first termite swarm. In warm parts
of structures the will swarm in structures, however this is very rare.

four stages of the life cycle of the flea. The adult flea constitutes only
about 5% of the entire flea population, when you consider all four stages of
the life cycle. Fleas lay their eggs on your pet, but the eggs do not always
stick and may fall off into the environment. The eggs make up about 50% of the
flea population. The entire life cycle (adult flea & egg & larvae &
pupa & adult) can be completed in 14 – 21 days with the proper temperature
and humidity conditions. This adds to the problem of flea control. Experts
advise if you see one flea, there may be more than 100 offspring or adults
nearby in the furniture, corners, cracks, carpet, or on your pet!

much of the year. In areas of the U.S. where they typically have a winter
season where the temperatures go below 60 degrees F, the flea numbers will
decrease. An average flea season can be estimated from March through November.
This is because fleas love the warm weather above 60 degrees F. Another factor
that affects your flee season is if your home is always kept warm throughout
the year and you do not fix your flea problem with professionals. Remember even
is its cold outside that doesn't mean fleas won’t find a way to reproduce in
your warm, cozy home.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 13.5pt;">How:<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 13.5pt;"> They start out as
eggs that then hatch into sexually immature larvae. As time passes they become
mobile and move onto foliage or any outdoor structures like fences or
buildings. Larval ticks infest small animals like mice or birds. They feed on
their blood until they are fully engorged (about the size of a poppy seed) and
fall off. These engorged larval ticks then molt into a sexually immature
eight-legged nymphs. These Nymphs are now looking for a medium sized animal
like squirrels, dogs, rabbits and even humans to feed off of. This usually
takes four to five days to finish. The engorged nymphs then fall off of the
host and finally molt into sexually mature, eight-legged adult. The adult
searches for a larger mammal like a deer where they also start to mate with
females. Once again they fall off of the host to lay eggs, die, and the cycle
begins again.

to be outside enjoying nature and by this time (usually June through August)
the ticks are in their ‘nymph’ stage. This means they are at a stage where they

As spring arrives there might be some mini carpenters working inside your house you never called for and when I say "mini" I mean it.

Name: These ants are referred to as “carpenter’s” because they build their nests by cutting, grooving, and sanding a series of long tunnels called “galleries” within the wood of your home.

Appearance: They range in size from a 8th of an inch for a worker carpenter ant to a half an inch for a queen carpenter ant.

Shape: Oval

Color: Range in color from red to black

Legs: 6

Wings: Varies

Antenna: Yes

Where: They are most common in the United States.
Habitat: They like to nest in damp locations and prefer to excavate wood that has been compromised by any type of moisture such as water and mold. Places where you can find them inside your home can range from bathrooms, walls, behind siding, in your attic, insulation, sink, attic beams, showers and dishwashers or hollow spaces such as wall voids, curtain rods and doors.
Diet: They do not actually eat the wood they remove; they leave piles of frass. They do eat living and dead insects, meats, fats, and many sugary foods.
How: A colony is made from a single fertilized queen and makes her nest in a cavity in wood. She then raises her first brood of workers. She feeds them saliva and does not leave the nest or feed herself during this time. When they are ready, those workers then get the job of gathering food to feed the next generation. Once mature, this first generation of worker ants work to increase the food supply for the colony. The colony population grows very rapidly. A colony can eventually produce 2,000 or more workers.
When: The larvae start to develop during the spring time.
Impact: They do not carry any diseases to harm humans or pets but they can damage and weaken the wood that keeps your house standing which can cause repairs that can weaken your pocket.
Prevention: Remove standing water; they are attracted to moisture. Keep tree branches cut away from your home as pests can use these means to get into your home. Keep an eye on the base of your home for cracks or crevasse’s where pests can enter. Also make sure you don’t stack fire wood and building material near your home as these ants like to build nests in wood.
They are most likely termites, the best way to tell is the shape of the little black insects body. An ant has three distinct body parts: a head an abdomen and a thorax. The termite also is made up of these three body parts, however the distinction between the parts is not as pronounced. The termite looks like an elongated oval the size of a pencil lead, the ant is pinch twice. once at the "shoulder" and again at the "waist".
Both insects have two pairs of wings, however with the ants the sets of wings are different sizes, with the termites both sets of wings are of equal length.
If you are seeing stocky black ants in your home and you live in the North East, chances are they are Carpenter Ants. There are varying levels of Carpenter Ant activity, people report seeing one or two ants everyday or so, others see twenty-five ants every time they open the dishwasher.

A Carpenter Ant colony is made up of a network of satellite colonies. There are groups of ants performing different functions for the good of the entire colony. These satellite colonies range in population from a dozen or so insects up to over a thousand. There are food gathering stations, stations that care for ants in the larval stage, stations that care for reproductions(alates), stations that care for the eggs, and a station that cares for the queen.

Carpenter Ants do not eat wood they excavate it. If they are in your home they are not necessarily chewing it down. Many times they are in a void, under the insulation, going about their business. If you are finding piles of sawdust(frass) under a window or on the basement floor, you probably have ants. A good way to tell is inspect the sawdust. The ants throw everything out with that frass and if you look closely you will see parts of dead insects in it.

Generally the presence of these ants is indicative of a moisture problem. Poor ventilation, a leaky window or door frame, if a deck is not properly flashed or if the dryer vents into the attic, these all supply the ants with the elevated moisture levels that the ants need.

The ants in your home are part of the larger colony, a very important part of solving the problem is to inspect the exterior of the home. There are trails the ants use to get from one satellite group to another. With patience these trails can be discovered and the colony can be eliminated using non-repellent insecticides.

A trick to finding out what the ants are up to inside your home is to mix up some sugar water and place it in an out of the way area where you are confident the ants will find it. Once it is discovered the ants will form a procession from the food source back to their staging area. You can watch them come out of their hiding place head straight for the food and march straight back. When a licensed pest control tech gets there he can swap your sugar water with his Carpenter Ant bait and wipe out the satellite colony operating in your home.

Don't panic the problem can be solved. Call a licensed and insured pest control company in your area and ask them some questions. They should will be able to help you and stand behind their work.Peterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14533626899062576110noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26679708.post-8560893035535163922009-04-06T07:05:00.000-07:002020-03-03T06:40:27.505-08:00CARPENTER ANTSNo fear, Carpenter Ants do not eat wood, they excavate it. Generally the are only in your home to pick up your crumbs and slurp up sweets. If you see ants everyday then there may be a satellite colony operating from inside your walls.

These satellite colonies set up shop in an area with high moisture content. Around windows, sliding glass doors, poorly vented attics, pipe chases or other areas where moisture may build up.

The satellite colony in your home is just a part of the problem. Outside the house is where the majority of the ants live. If you pay close enough attention to what the ants on the outside of your house are up to you will be able to put together how their operation works.

When you figure out the way their operation works you can break it. By breaking the colony we can be sure that you will not see any more ants in your home.
Mother earth is waking up from her long nap and the creatures that pay the bills are up and about.

I am lucky to be able to bring my Golden Retriever, Maxwell, to work with me. Every day at lunch we walk two an a half miles and today I noticed the first ant activity along the route.

Pavement ants were building their sand hills, a sign that rain is in the forecast. One tree on the route had Carpenter Ants moving up and down it. More importantly our phones are ringing off the hook.

People are finding termites in their yards, swarms are filling up their kitchens and they are calling in a panic. The ants are moving, they are working hard to find the food that will grow the next generation. The ants are finding that food in peoples kitchens which prompts them to call us.

If spring has sprung inside your home give us a call, we will move nature back outside.

Attached is a picture of the Ag Day team with Commissioner Doug Petersen. He was a little surprised and a lot encouraged to see us there doing our thing and giving industry a presence at this event. This was an unexpected and very much welcomed, impromptu meeting and this is the kind of thing that shows the value of getting to the statehouse and participating.Peterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14533626899062576110noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26679708.post-15458634145641512132009-03-26T07:37:00.001-07:002020-03-03T07:41:37.061-08:00AGRICULTURAL DAY
Carpenter Ants

About 600 species of ants are found in the United States, but most ant-related structural damage in the Northeast is caused by the large black Carpenter Ant (Camponotus pennsylvanicus). In its natural habitat, this ant acts as an important decomposer of decaying trees, but, once Carpenter Ants are inside buildings, they are annoying and destructive pests. Unlike termites, Carpenter Ants do not eat wood but tunnel into it to construct their nests. They are slow to cause much harm, but without control they can do structural damage.

IDENTIFICATION
Accurate identification is crucial for selecting appropriate control measures for any pest. Carpenter Ants found in Massachusetts are black, shiny, and relatively large, ranging in size from one-quarter of an inch to three-quarters of an inch. Fertile males and females, which emerge in late spring or early summer to mate, have wings.

LIFE CYCLE
Ants are social insects, occupying colonies that overwinter in a nest within a building or tree. Each colony has a queen, which produces eggs, and workers, who tend the young, build and guard the nest, and forage for food. During the late spring and early summer, large numbers of winged males and females emerge from the nest to mate. The males then die, but mated females lose their wings and begin searching for new nest sites.

After finding and excavating a new nest site, the female seals herself into a small cavity and lays about 15 to 20 eggs. She tends the eggs, which develop into legless larvae. They pupate, and adult ants emerge from the tan pupil cocoons. When the new adults are old enough to care for the next brood, the queen produces more eggs, even though she mates only once.

FOOD
The Carpenter Ants' primary food is honeydew secreted by plant-dwelling insects such as aphids. They also feed on dead insects, the juices of plants and fruit, meat, fat, and sweets. The workers eat the food, carry it back to the nest, and feed other ants.

Workers can live up to six months without food. If a colony is stressed by the lack of food and water, the queen and a few workers can survive for long periods by resorting to cannibalism.

NEST SITES
A study of Carpenter Ant nests in the Northeast determined that 75 percent of them are located in dead trees, and they are important decomposers of decaying trees, but once in a while they infest buildings where they become destructive and annoying pests. Carpenter Ants are usually noticed in the spring or summer when they are seeking mates or foraging for food. Tree branches that brush against the building, clotheslines, woodpiles, or cable, phone, or electric wires can provide a route for the ants to enter and establish a new nest.

In homes, Carpenter Ants may nest without attacking structural wood. They can use voids in walls, or voids around windows and doors. When they do enter the wood structure of a house or building, it is usually because the wood is easy to excavate due to dampness or rot.

DETECTING THE PRESENCE OF A NEST
The presence of many large black ants inside a building, or small piles of loose sawdustlike shavings (frass), are signs that ants may be nesting inside the structure.

Check for small piles of frass in basements, in closets, attics, around the foundation, under porches, and any area where there is moist wood.

Observe the ants, especially outdoors. Foraging ants tend to wander, but ants returning to the nest often take a direct route. Watch to see where they go. If several are entering the building at the same location, the nest is probably nearby.

A sweet bait such as jelly or honey can be placed in an area where the ants are frequently seen. Put a tablespoon in a jar lid and then follow the ants as they return to the nest.
